Can I Use Any Haircare On My Extensions?

December 11, 2025

Hair extensions are a big part of your look, so it’s important to treat them right. One of the most common questions is: can I use any shampoo or conditioner on them? The short answer is no.

Why Not All Haircare Works for Extensions

Most everyday shampoos and conditioners, especially mass brands from the drugstores aren’t made for extensions. They often have ingredients that can cause problems, like:

  • Sulfates – strip away moisture and make hair dry
  • Silicones – leave heavy buildup that makes extensions dull
  • Proteins – can make extension hair stiff or brittle

Extensions don’t get natural oils from your scalp like your own hair does. That means they need gentle products that keep them hydrated without weighing them down.

What Your Extensions Need

To keep your hair extensions soft and shiny and last longer. Choose products that are sulfate free, protein free and lightweight. At EH Hair and Extensions we always use formulas created specifically for extension hair made from human hair as well as your hair, such as the Jadore Haircare Shampoo, Conditioner and Treatment Mask. These products help maintain softness without affecting the bonds.

Keep conditioner and masks on the mid lengths and ends only. This helps protect the bond area and prevents slippage, without damaging tapes, wefts, or bonds.

Simple Additions That Protect Your Extensions

A weekly hydrating mask and a few drops of lightweight oil on the mids and ends can make a big difference in the long run. A gentle routine is often more effective than using many different products.

What products should I avoid with extensions?

Avoid products with sulfates, silicones or proteins. These can dry the hair or weaken the bonds.

Can I use my regular shampoo?

Most regular shampoos are not suitable, even salon brands. Choose a sulfate free and protein free formula.

Do I need purple shampoo?

You can use purple shampoo on the mids and ends when needed. Avoid the roots and bonds.

Can I use oils on extensions?

Yes, as long as the oil is lightweight. Remember, just apply to the mids and ends.

Do extensions get dry faster?

Yes. Since they do not receive natural oils from the scalp, they need hydrating products and gentle care.

Is a repairing mask safe?

Choose a hydrating mask rather than a strengthening one. Strengthening products often contain proteins.
