Excited for your hair extensions appointment? We know that treating yourself to a new, glamorous and bouncy hair style, getting that luxurious hair that you’ve always dreamed of can really work wonders for your self-confidence! Beautiful, healthy new hair is definitely something to look forward to.

Before you head into the salon, knowing how to prepare your hair for hair extensions is key to having an easy, simple and enjoyable extension application experience.

Whether you need to know how to prepare for tape hair extensions, weft or micro bead, following these steps will help to set you (and your stylist!) up for success.

How to prepare for hair extensions

On the day of your appointment, you’ll want to be sure that your hair extension expert will be able to carry out an easy and successful application process by getting your hair ready for the glamorous transformation. Before your appointment, remember to:

Thoroughly wash your hair

You’ll get the best hair extension application experience if you head into the salon with freshly washed, clean hair. When it comes to knowing how to prepare for hair extensions, cleaning your hair and setting it up to be an ideal canvas for the application process is the most important step.

Don’t use conditioner

Usually, applying conditioner to your hair after shampooing is ideal to keep it healthy and shiny, but skipping the conditioner is best before applying hair extensions. This is because the residual oiliness of the conditioner can make the application process a little more difficult.

Instead, make sure to regularly treat your hair with a nourishing treatment in the weeks leading up to your appointment, so that it won’t feel too dry and brittle when washing it without applying conditioner on the day of your appointment.

Skip the hair oils or treatments

Applying nourishing treatments to your hair is a beneficial habit, but skip this usual hair care step before your extensions appointment. Clean hair is key to a successful extension application process as oils can interfere with the bonding process.

Come in with dry and detangled hair

For your hair to be ready to start the hair extension application process, it will need to be dry, neat and as easy to work with as possible. Allow yourself with enough time for your hair to naturally dry, or make sure to blow dry your hair before your appointment.

Make sure you gently brush through your hair before arriving at your appointment, removing any tangling or knots. To take extra care, you should either wear your hair down or in a loose bun or ponytail when you make your way to the salon, to prevent any further tangling on your commute!

What to keep in mind before getting your extensions

As well as preparing your hair for the application process, being prepared for the love and care that you will need to give your hair to keep your extensions at their highest quality is important.

Aftercare is essential!

Before getting your extensions, you should familiarise yourself with the maintenance that your extensions will need to keep them in their top condition.

You will need to keep them clean and nourished with high quality hair care products, keep them brushed with a non-damaging hair brush to prevent tangling and matting, and avoid exposing them to chlorinated or salt water. Depending on the application method, you will generally be able to swim with hair extensions, but rinsing your hair immediately after you swim and making sure your hair is damp before swimming will help to protect your hair from absorbing the chlorine or salt.

You’ll need to revisit your salon for maintenance

As your natural hair grows, your hair extensions will need to be moved up to keep them in their ideal position. This means that you’ll need to come back into your salon every six to eight weeks on average, depending on how fast your hair typically grows.

Maintenance appointments are essential for keeping your hair in the best condition, preventing damage and ensuring that the natural-looking, glamorous look stays in place. Not only is it important for the quality of your hair, but it is essential for the health of your scalp, too.
