Sleep, Swim & Sweat with Hair Extensions (Without Ruining Them)

October 23, 2025

We get it, you want your extensions to look amazing and fit your lifestyle. You shouldn’t have to give up swimming, working out, or sleeping comfortably just because you’ve got them in.
The secret? A few small tweaks to your routine.

The Short Answer: Yes, You Can

Extensions are made to be lived in, you just need to care for them a little differently.

Sleeping with Extensions

  • Always go to bed with dry hair. Sleeping with damp roots can loosen bonds or tapes.
  • Tie your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail before bed using a silk scrunchie.
  • Swap your cotton pillowcase for a silk one, it’ll reduce tangles and friction overnight.

Working Out

  • If you have sweated a lot during training, towel-dry your roots gently and let them air dry or blow-dry on cool.
  • Avoid tight ponytails, go for a low braid or clip instead.
  • Brush after workouts to prevent matting or salt build-up from sweat.

Swimming (Pool or Ocean)

  • Before swimming in the ocean, apply a light oil or leave-in through your mids and ends (but never on the bonds).
  • Tie your hair in a plait or low ponytail before you hop in. Avoid a top knot/bun as this can result in tangling.
  • After swimming, rinse straight away with fresh water.
  • Shampoo gently with a sulfate-free product such as the jadore luxury boost shampoo and dry your roots completely.
  • Avoid chlorine altogether so when swimming in a chlorine pool, use a cover for your hair or tie it up high and avoid getting it wet.

Extra tip: choose mineral zinc-based sunscreens (with no Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) and avoid applying SPF directly to your hair, neck, or shoulders where it can transfer.

Product Rules

  • Always use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner
  • Keep heavy masks or oils away from adhesive points
  • Protect your hair from UV and heat exposure
  • Stick to a consistent maintenance and refit schedule of 4-6 weeks

Quick FAQ:

Which is worse, pool or ocean water?

Both can dry the hair out as salt roughens the cuticle but chlorine strips moisture and has a far more negative impact because of the chemical. Wherever possible it is best to avoid chlorine as it can also have a colour impact turning blonde hair green. This can occur on our natural hair as well as extensions.

Final Tip:

You don’t have to choose between gorgeous hair and an active lifestyle, you just need to know how to look after it. A few mindful habits make all the difference!
